IN-CHARACTER:
Character name: George Cooper
Character journal: rogueroyalty
Series name: Tortall Series (kind of....the whole universe doesn't really have a name. He's specifically from the Lioness Quartet but I live forever in hope of castmembers)
Canon notes: From basically right after the whole final battle thing, basically this is a vacation before having to do cleanup.

Species: Human

History: Here. It's relevant up until about the first paragraph of Baron/Spymaster George.

Personality: George was raised by an educated ex-priestess, but since he was a little kid, he's been making an effort to fit in with other commoners. This is very likely where he first developed his ability to blend in and to sneak, his very first lies: that he hadn't been educated a good deal more than a lot of his peers. This has always been a big part of George, feigning innocence and a lack of education over the top, while using his skills to get him where he wanted to be. This (and very probably patronage from the Crooked God) led him to become the King of Thieves younger than anyone else had ever managed.

A lot of things work towards his kingship, he is, first of all, obviously incredibly ruthless. You have to be, to defeat an old Rogue who's survived through countless attempts at taking his throne, outwitting someone who's had years to stay where he is. That applies to being a good Rogue as well: George demands effective spying and thievery from his subjects. He literally has a chest full of the ears of people who have failed him, giving them three chances to prove themselves before he kills them for letting him down.

That said, he seems to command loyalty primarily through being good at his job, at protecting thieves and other commoners and servants. His subjects and various seconds-in-command don't seem to fear him, so much as they're loyal to him, and don't want to let him down. He's obviously learned to make friends easily, and his ability to blend in likely serves him well in this. Their loyalty, considering the Rogue's job is to keep his people safe and happy and fed means that he likely also has a good arrangement of planning and leadership skills. He becomes a spymaster later on, and a very good one, so thinking that he's good at management is a fairly safe bet, despite never precisely seeing it in action.

George, himself, is incredibly loyal to whomever he's decided to protect. Once he's decided that Alanna is important to him, he puts all of his Rogue resources into making sure she isn't hurt by any unsavoury elements not under his control. Whenever she asks for his aid, whether it's in learning how to better defend herself, or sending letters safely to her brother, or getting some information, he does his best to get her what she needs. He does the same for his friends in the Court, and those who depend on him, keeping an eye out, making sure they see healers, bringing them to the homes of various contacts he knows they'll be safe at.

Finally, he's got what he'd term a "crooked" mind. He's good at thinking about things in different ways, at keeping things secret. He's good at playing a part, at acting, at putting on a role and pretending he's someone different than he is to sneak his way safely into different places. He's clever enough to learn languages and speak them without an accent, at learning various different codes, and even inventing new ones. If George puts his mind to a thing, he's likely to manage it. And even so, he still listens to and depends on his own magical version of gut instinct. It's putting both of those together which make him as effective as he is.

Abilities:
- George has the magical power known in his world as 'The Sight'. Basically, it not only augments your actual vision, but allows a person a sort of heightened observation: the ability to tell if someone is nearby, to spot magical ability, to see if someone is aided by the gods. He would probably make an amazing detective if he wasn't the King of the Thieves in Tortall. Note that some of the cooler abilities (sensing poison, seeing really far away things) only apply to his future daughter who got a much better version.
- George has almost superhuman speed as far as movement goes, able to draw daggers or dodge projectiles incredibly quickly. Or at least quickly enough that he's mentioned as being known for it. This translates into being really great at hand-to-hand combat, or combat involving knives. ....the other combat stuff is gonna be kind of useless to him here but. You know. Speed might help somewhere, maybe.

CHARACTER INFORMATION

NAME: George Cooper
CANON: Lioness Quartet by Tamora Pierce
AGE: 26
CANON POINT: Lioness Rampant, fourth book in the series, before Alanna comes home from the east and things go down.

BACKGROUND: Tamora Pierce wiki link...only some of it is relevant but there we are.
INCENTIVE/FIT: Ok here goooesss: George would prefer to do most stuff for himself. He also knows Alanna, who he super cares about would never forgive him if he did anything for her she could totally do. In addition, he is really not cool with raising people from the dead. So that leaves pretty much one thing he can do for her, which is save her stupid twin brother from his stupid self. And, y'know, maybe stop Roger from whatever he's doing at the same time: bonus. Basically, Alanna killed Roger when she was 17, and then her so-clever-he's-actually-dumb twin bro, Thom brought him back from the grave to prove how great a sorcerer he was. Unfortunately, this tied them together magically and now Roger is slowly killing Thom of a magical fever and there's nothing anyone can do. Now, while George doesn't know the precise details, he knows Thom fucked up, and he doesn't give enough of a shit about Thom to let him hurt Alanna by letting himself die for his own pride (as shown in series by him completely ignoring what Thom forbade him from doing and telling his old magic prof to come and help). So he'd ask for Thom to get cured of whatever the hell magical thing he's gotten himself into.

As far as fitting in, George is an open and friendly sort of dude who can work his way into a lot of groups so I imagine he won't have much trouble on that front.

ANYTHING ELSE?
George has the magical power known in his world as 'The Sight'. Basically, it not only augments your actual vision, but allows a person a sort of heightened observation: the ability to tell if someone is nearby, to spot magical ability, to see if someone is aided by the gods. He would probably make an amazing detective if he wasn't the King of the Thieves in Tortall. Anyway, I doubt that kind of power will need much toning down but you can let me know. I'll be making a permissions page so people can tell me if they think their character's magic would prevent his Sight on them anyway, as in his canon, he can't See much about people with the Gift, save that they're nearby or that they have magic.

As far as weapons go, he'll want to have his sword but that's less important than--I hate to do this--an unreasonable amount of daggers. How many is he allowed? He keeps at least six on himself in canon and he'd probably want spares... He's a terrible Rogue.
